Airstream Life

photos, videos, and blogs about the Airstream lifestyle

We are in the process of acquiring a 28' International, that has a gross weight of 7,600 Lbs. We are going to need to buy a new tow vehicle and would like to hear opinions on what you recommend as the "best" vehicle to buy. We would also like to know your opinions on what NOT to buy. We probably want an SUV, not a pick up truck.

Thanks,
Rich and Christina

If you want a gas engine SUV, you've got plenty of choices. We used a Nissan Armada for three years of full timing and were quite happy towing our 30' Safari (GVWR 8400).

For diesel SUV there are very few choices, and all are European makes. We now use a Mercedes GL320, which is very good (built in Alabama).

Keep in mind that SUVs tend to have shorter wheelbases than the equivalent trucks, so you may require a Hensley or Pro-Pride hitch with that 28 footer.

I pull my 34 foot Airstream (2000) with a 2003 Ford Excursion with a V-10 gas engine, towing package, Class 4 hitch, Reese dual cam sway control. It tows like a dream. While the Excursion is out of production, the V10 is still in production for pickups and is being used on many gas motorhomes. I get between 9 & 10 mpg while towing and 12 to 14 without trailer. Its perfect for our use.
